INSTA Caster Wheel Question & Answer
What is the weight capacity of the 8” swivel caster wheels?
The INSTA 8" container swivel caster wheel is a heavy-duty twist locking mechanism wheel with a load rating of 6600lb per caster wheel and is designed to move loaded containers within its specified capacity. The total supported load includes the total weight of the container and its contents, including internal weight distribution. Always refer to the product sheet for the exact rating and ensure the container and contents do not exceed the combined capacity.
Are container wheels meant for long-term or temporary use?
Container wheels are primarily intended for temporary movement and positioning of containers around a site, not for long-distance transport like a trailer. They are ideal for rolling a container into a building, repositioning it in a yard, or fine-tuning its location. Once in place, most customers set the container back down on solid supports or leveling pads for long-term use.
Do container wheels work over uneven ground?
Container wheels work best on firm, reasonably level surfaces such as concrete and asphalt. Mild irregularities are usually manageable, but deep potholes, soft ground including gravel, or steep slopes can make movement difficult or unsafe. If the route is uneven, additional equipment or ground preparation may be required before moving the container on casters.
Can the wheels be installed by one person?
A single experienced installer can often attach the wheels, however, having two people is strongly recommended for safety. The twist-lock style attachment makes it quick to engage the wheel into the corner casting. Always follow safe lifting and blocking practices so the container cannot shift while wheels are being installed or removed.
Are wheels compatible with all container sizes?
The wheels are designed to fit standard ISO corner castings, so they are compatible with most 20' and 40' containers and many similar units that use standard castings. Regardless of container size, you must ensure that the total weight of the container and its contents does not exceed the combined rating of the wheels used. Check both the container and wheel product information before use.
What tools are needed for installation?
Because the wheels use a twist-lock connection, no special tools are required to engage them into the corner castings once the container is properly lifted or supported. However, appropriate lifting equipment such as jacks, cribbing, or a forklift is needed to safely raise the container enough to install the wheels. Always follow the safety guidance in the installation instructions.
