What is the difference between standard and retractable twist locks?

Standard twist locks have a fixed head that remains above the mounting surface, while retractable twist locks can be lowered flush when not in use. Retractable styles are ideal where a flat deck or surface is needed when containers are not stacked. Both provide secure locking between containers or between containers and supporting structures when engaged correctly.

Are twist locks compatible with all ISO containers?

INSTA twist locks are designed around ISO corner casting dimensions and are compatible with standard ISO shipping containers. As long as the container uses standard corner castings in good condition, the twist locks will engage and secure properly. Any severely damaged, modified, or non-standard castings should be inspected before use.

When should I use bridge fittings vs. stacking cones? 

Bridge fittings are used to clamp adjacent containers together side by side, helping keep them aligned and connected laterally. Stacking cones or hanging stacking cones are used when containers are stacked vertically to help locate and stabilize the upper container on the lower one. Many multi-container installations use both: twist locks or cones for stacking and bridge fittings for tying sides together.

Do deck-mount twist locks require welding?

Deck-mount twist locks are designed to be permanently attached to a deck, frame, or other structure and are often welded in place for maximum strength. Some applications may allow for bolted installation if the underlying structure is suitable. Always follow the installation recommendations for the specific twist lock model and application.

How much load can your twist locks support?

Each twist lock has a rated working load limit and ultimate capacity listed on its product sheet. These ratings are designed to meet or exceed typical ISO container handling requirements when installed correctly. For safety, never exceed the published working load limit and always ensure the supporting structure is capable of carrying the same or greater loads.

Can connectors be used for both stacking and securing?

Yes, many connectors can both locate and secure containers, but not every connector is intended for every direction of loading. Twist locks and stacking cones are primarily for vertical stacking and alignment, while bridge fittings are for side-to-side securing. Review each connector’s intended use on the product sheet to make sure you are using the correct hardware for your configuration.
