Security Lock Boxes Question & Answer

What is the difference between the standard lock box and the puck lock box?

The standard INSTA lock box is designed to shield a conventional padlock or 'C' type block lock, while the puck lock box is built specifically for a low-profile “puck” style lock. Puck lock boxes offer very little exposed hardware, making them extremely hard to cut or pry, while standard lock boxes are more universal and work with a wider range of padlocks. Both dramatically improve security by enclosing the lock body and protecting it from bolt cutters and direct attacks.

Do INSTA lock boxes fit all container door styles?

INSTA lock boxes are designed primarily for standard ISO cargo doors on shipping containers and are sized to fit the typical locking rod and door profiles. They will fit the majority of standard and high cube containers in the field. For non-standard doors, roll-up doors, or site-built swing doors, fit should be checked against the product drawings and some customization may be required.

How long does it take to install a lock box?

Our Bolt-on lock box installs in less than an hour. Once the lock box is positioned, the installer drills through the marked locations and secures the hardware per the installation guide. Because no welding or repainting is required, downtime for the container is minimal. Tools required are listed on the installation guide.

What locks are compatible with INSTA lock boxes?

Standard INSTA lock boxes are designed to work with common padlocks and 80mm 'C' style block locks, including INSTA-branded padlocks, block locks and many popular third-party models. The puck lock boxes are sized specifically for puck-style locks such as the INSTA puck lock and compatible equivalents. For best performance and fit, we recommend using the lock models listed on the product sheet or recommended by your INSTA dealer.

How does a lock box improve container security?

A lock box surrounds and shields the lock body so the shackle is much harder to access with tools. This greatly reduces the effectiveness of bolt cutters, prybars, and other common break-in methods. In addition, the added steel and low profile make it harder for thieves to target the lock directly, which is often the weakest point on an unsecured container.

Are lock boxes removable or permanent?

Bolt-on lock boxes are considered a permanent upgrade, but they can be removed by unbolting if the container is being repurposed or repaired. There is no welding involved, so the container structure is not permanently altered by heat. If a lock box is removed, the installer can plug or seal the bolt holes as needed for appearance or weatherproofing.
